Hands-on English For Adapt Technicians

Welcome Tour Erasmus Plus in Plymouth UK Almond Vocational Link

Erasmus Plus Students Plymouth UK AlmondvoclinkOn Monday 27th April we welcomed a group of very bright young individuals from Portugal who came to Plymouth for a 10 week work experience placement via Erasmus Plus Key Action 1 mobility for individuals in vocational educational training.

The lucky twelve, were selected by their teachers and represented their technical college from Lisbon very well. The core purpose of this experience was to improve the students’s English in a professional environment and broaden their vocabulary in technical subjects.

The participants were studying in many technical areas towards becoming illustrators, animators, network engineers, IT specialists, 3D designers, game and app developers. Almond Vocational Link worked with the Portuguese partners on finding the most suitable work placement providers and accommodation in Plymouth for the group.

We also arranged 20 hours of English language training with our teacher Gary Mardell to give our new students a little boost prior to starting internship. During their course, the group had a chance to brush up on their grammar and vocabulary in a fun and interactive way. Here is what they had to say about their English Language Course:

After the initial 2 weeks of English Language training, Almond Vocational Link’s representatives personally escorted all the students to their new work placements and introduced them to their work experience supervisors. The participants settled in their new environment and routine very quickly and worked very well along the already established teams for 35 hours per week. We kept in touch with both interns and supervisors thanks to the weekly 1:1 meetings and introduction of detailed time sheets:

Throughout their stay, the participants also took part in our weekly social events – the Language Cafe. Language Cafe is a socio-cultural event running weekly on every Thursday. It encourages foreign language speakers to integrate, learn English and explore the varied British culture. The students joined in with many fun activities like bowling, games evening, movie night, comedy evening and several cultural walks around Plymouth. This events is open to all our students as well as to all Plymouth residents who want to improve their English in a fun and interactive way.  Our students had a great chance to meet other people and practice their conversational skills.

A few days before the student’s departure, we had a monitoring visit from the school’s representative – Mr Vasco Corisco. We arranged meetings with work placement supervisors, and visited the host companies with Vasco, so that he could gather feedback about each student’s progress. This helped the teacher to get an overall impression of the impact this project has had on his students.

On Friday 3rd July we all met again for the official Certificate Ceremony at Almond Vocational Links office in City Business Park. All of the students were awarded with certificates of completion for participating in Erasmus Plus Key Action 1 mobility work experience and an additional certificate for taking part in 20 hour English Language course organised by Almond Vocational Link.

The students also completed the final evaluation forms and gave their opinion on the quality of the services provided by Almond Vocational Link. Many thanks for all of your kind words, we wish you all the best for the future. You achieved so much whilst in Plymouth and don’t forget, the world is your oyster now.
